Bill Clinton’s Africa AIDS tour
MAPUTO (AFP) - Former US president Bill Clinton arrived in Mozambique on the first leg of a six-nation Africa tour announcing a 50-million-dollar donation to the country in the fight against HIV and AIDS on the continent.
“The Clinton Foundation, through the Irish government are going to donate 50 million dollars (41.5 million euros) to finance HIV and AIDS and health projects in Mozambique,” Clinton said in Maputo.
“My foundation is bound to support Mozambique in its efforts and I am touched at the start of my trip in Africa by the visit to children who are receiving treatment which is saving their lives at the hospital,” the former president told reporters. (more…)
G8 Aid, debt relief not seen as panacea for Africa
JOHANNESBURG (Mariam Isa, Reuters) - Aid and debt relief will do little to ease Africa’s problems for as long as the world’s poorest continent lacks the infrastructure and controls to ensure donor money is used properly, analysts say.
Agreement by the Group of Eight industrial countries last Friday to more than double annual aid to Africa — after writing off the debt of 14 African states earlier — was welcomed by many officials and aid organizations.
But analysts warned the main challenge would lie in channeling the money effectively to countries that lacked the institutional capacity to distribute the aid, or where corruption was rife. (more…)
Geldof, Bono Praise G-8 Aid for Africa
GLENEAGLES, Scotland - Rockers Bob Geldof and Bono, two of the world’s best known Africa fund-raisers, declared victory Friday in their campaign to push leaders at the G-8 summit to double aid to the continent.

“We’ve pulled this off,” said U2 frontman Bono.
He and Geldof praised the Group of Eight summit for pledging to double aid to Africa to $50 billion, saying the move will save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who would have died of poverty, malaria or AIDS.
