A couple of weeks ago, Samuel Eto'o was voted by FIFA the tird best best player in the world. This led many to think he was on he way to a sweep all the african awards. Not so fast, as one might say... Drogba just won the the "Golden Lion Award", which has become a traditional indicator of the destiny of the African Footballer of the Year award
Drogba did so by narrowly beating Samuel Eto'o to the 2005 Golden Lion prize for the best African footballer. The Ivory Coast international, who was instrumantal to the qualification of his national team for the world cup Cup finals in Germany, finished with 146 points ahead of Eto'o's 144 in the poll of sports journalists from across the African continent conducted by the Moroccan sports newspaper Al Mountakhab. Ghana's Michael Essien was a distant third with 54 point. In the mean time, Egypt and Ahly's Mohamed Barakat has won the 2005 BBC African Footballer of the Year award. the BBC award is the result of the online BBC community, and is more a popularity contest amont BBC faithfuls. Barakat, a key member of Ahly's African Champions League-winning team, won the award ahead of Samuel Eto'o and Obafemi Martins of Nigeria, who finished third.
Could Eto'o win almost all in Europe and nothing in Africa? That will be unbelivable! |
