Great Lakes leaders promise peace

DR Congo's civil war has inflicted untold sufferingPresidents of the Great Lakes region in Africa have signed a declaration designed to bring peace to the region.
Fifteen leaders signed the accord on security, democracy and development at a summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said leaders who faced each other in armed conflict had come together to back a "common vision of peace".

Millions have died in inter-related regional conflicts that erupted in the region after the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

Zimbabwe under fresh scrutiny

James Murape stands among parched maize crops on a farm near HarareZimbabwe is under fresh scrutiny by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which will consider expelling it from the body unless it repays its debts.
IMF officials are in Zimbabwe assessing the country's economic situation ahead of a key meeting in March to decide on Zimbabwe's continued membership.

Zimbabwe repaid a large chunk of its outstanding debt last year, but still owes the IMF more than $136m (£76m).

Nairobi Building Collapses

Special security teams and volunteer corps were on Monday night battling with time to rescue an unknown number of workers trapped in the rubble of a six-storey building that collapsed in Nairobi, killing unknown number of people.

At least 10 people were confirmed dead. By 10.45 pm at least 75 victims, with various degrees of injuries, had been pulled out of the heap of concrete blocks and dust.

The injured were admitted to various hospitals. Housing Assistant minister Joshua Toro estimated the number of those either trapped or lying dead in the ugly heap to be 200.

The US, UK and Israeli governments have pledged to send personnel to help in the rescue operation.
