AFRICA: No "magic bullets' to end poverty: Q&A with Jeffrey Sachs JOHANNESBURG, 20 Mar 2006 (IRIN) -  In 2005 economist Jeffrey Sachs presented an action plan to meet the UN's poverty-slashing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, which included practical and affordable interventions such as bed-nets to fight malaria, vaccinations to combat infectious diseases, the provision of anti-AIDS drugs, fertilisers to improve crop yields and drilling wells to provide safe drinking water.
Sachs's action plan is being implemented in several hamlets in Malawi, Kenya and Ethiopia, and forms the basis of the UN Millennium Village Project, in which research is being carried out by the Earth Institute of Columbia University, with financial support from the Japanese government, to find a model for fighting poverty at village level.

Liberia has formally asked Nigeria to extradite former Liberian President Charles Taylor.  A spokeswoman for Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said he would put the request to other African leaders.
A UN-backed war crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone wants to put Mr Taylor on trial for backing Sierra Leone rebels. He stood down as Liberian leader and went into exile in Nigeria in 2003 under an international deal to end Liberia's 14-year civil war. The 15,000 United Nations peacekeepers in Liberia are under instructions to arrest Mr Taylor and transfer him to the Special Court for Sierra Leone if he sets foot on Liberian soil. |

 KINSHASA, 17 Mar 2006 (IRIN) - Agricultural officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo have recorded at least 260 chickens and ducks suspected of having died of the avian flu, Agriculture Minister Constant Ndom Nda said on Thursday.
Announcing this at a news conference in the capital, Kinshasa, he made a public appeal to the United Nations for help to face the danger, and for the rehabilitation of veterinary laboratories in Kinshasa and the southern city of Lumbumbashi.
"We have passed Phase Four, and are no longer simply limited to mobilisation but to active intervention on the ground because we are now perhaps living in danger," he said.
